Summit for CHANGE

2nd August 2008
bringing together all efforts…
make a better Agra…
make a better world…

Agra, a city of rich heritage, culture, and serving as the identity of a nation of one billion strong calls for help. The name, originating from Agrabana in the Mahabharata, meant paradise—a paradise that is now lost. Let us reclaim it for her! Who better to do this than the youth of the city who will be the torch bearers of the Agra of tomorrow?
Agra has stood the test of time as conquering forces have passed through the subcontinent and taken hold of this jewel. But a new force comes from which no one will be spared: climate change. While the world awakens to this global threat, Agra and its youth sleep—unaware of the challenges that lie ahead for a city already beleaguered by the current sad state of city. Who will arise to this challenge of global proportions? Will Agra lie sleeping until it is too late? The city of the Taj which opens itself to millions from across the world annually deserves better. As the number of tourists continue to soar, the city which lays in shambles must have its conscience awaken to ensure that the citizens arise to greater civic duty so that the image of not only our city, but of the nation is not tarnished in the eyes of the world. One of the seven wonders of the world resides here, let that be an inspiration to make Agra drive the winds of change towards a new vision of a better world, a more sustainable world.
The challenges Agra faces today are not just the global ones. A toxic drain, the Yamuna, flows through our city. Traffic is becoming harder to manage. Monuments of Agra’s resplendent past crumble with neglect, and disillusion reigns amongst the populace which has no direction how or where to begin to address these problems. To awaken the consciousness of the citizens of Agra by raising awareness on the issues and allowing for productive channelization of their concerns, the summit, “Agra Calling” is required. The summit will inform and sensitize the young minds of the city, giving them a platform to be a part of the change and introduce the idea of awareness through art in the city.
A day long event of interaction, discussion, education and resolution will instill the ideas into the young minds.
This event aims at making people realise that this is a matter of utmost importance and there are ways in which people can make them a top priority instead of it being merely 'samaaj seva’.
The event will bring together three key stake holders: the government, NGOs, and youth.
The summit will serve as a network where in the flow of information and action is from the experts to the masses through the channel of the students who have the energy and the vision to bring about change.
Looking at Administrative and NGO support
v the Administration gets an opportunity to interact with the youth and elaborate on its efforts which do not sustain for long due to lack of public support and initiative.

v the various NGOs get to introduce themselves to the youth and establish them in the City of TAJ in case they are not here already

THE SUMMIT WOULD BE DIVIDED INTO 3 SESSIONS-
Session 1- AWARNESS AND DISCUSSION
ü Talks by experts on identified issues
ü Screening of movies
ü Presentations
ü Discussions

Session 2-ROLE OF THE NGO'S
ü Presenting the projects undertaken by Administration and various NGO's for the local and global issues
ü Discussion and planning as to how this target audience can be made a part of this process, thereby taking it to the masses

Session 3- CULTURAL EVENING
ü Groups of students to be invited to perform on the giving themes of concern in a non- competitive programme.
The major themes to be addressed can be broadly seen as-
Ø Heritage Conservation
Ø Save Yamuna- the water problems
Ø Garbage disposal
Ø Energy
Ø Traffic Management and road infrastructure
Ø Agra and tourism
Ø Environment & sustainable development- Global challenges
Ø Role of RTI
Ø Environmental entrepreneurship & Careers in the field
It is the city which bears the Taj… which boasts of world heritage sites… a city which has the story to tell… COME, let's make Agra a city of dreams, a city which can set an example to the world and share the responsibility of change as global citizens.
